This company has been calling my husband to collect on an unpaid electric bill from when he was in college. What should our first step be when we call them back?

You should have the written details about the debt from Asset Acceptance. This debt is too old to be reported in your husband's credit copy now, unless some payment is done recently. Get the debt validated as mentioned in the FDCPA. Once you have the info, send a dispute letter notifying about the expiry of SOL and reporting timeframe.

Cajun, junk debt collectors want people to think like you are thinking now. Since this debt is too old, perhaps you won't be bothered to send them any reply, except a C&D letter. They file a case against people and prove that he is avoiding the debt. If that person doesn't show up in the court, the judge puts a default judgment against him and he ends up paying it through court orders. However, if that person sends the dispute letters and takes all necessary actions in regards to this debt, he will keep himself safe following his legal rights.
