Can someone help me?
In January, I received a letter from a collection agency stating that I owed $470 to their client, LVNV Funding. It also stated that the original creditor was Amoco Oil. When I contacted the collection agency, they confirmed my social security number & current address on the account. However, they also told me that this was a gas credit card opened in 1991 and the last activity was in 1992. I pointed out that I was not old enough to have a credit card in 1991 and that I was in no way associated with this account. They further explained that their records show that LVNV Funding attempted to collect the debt various times at my current address (which is not true - I never heard a thing about this until the letter came this January from the collection agent).

I pointed out that my September 2005 credit report showed nothing related to this matter.

The collection agent told me to fax written dispute to them & that they will close out the account & send the documentation to LVNV Funding but that they COULD NOT give me any contact information for LVNV Funding so that I could attempt to resolve the matter my self or find out why my social security number has been associated with this account.

Does anyone have any insight as to what's really going on here? What further steps should I be taking?

The item is too old to be reported in your credit report, unless you make any payment on it. Send a dispute letter to the collection agency making the point that you are aware of the FCRA laws and the account is past the SOL period and the legal reporting time period in your credit. They will stop all collections on this account. Make sure that you send the letter through certified mail and return receipt requested. You should have all documentation complete in case of any dispute arising later.

See other topics discussed on LVNV Funding. You will get more information about their collection practices and how to resolve the matter.
