About a month ago I received a call from a CA about an electric bill that I had. I researched and found that I had paid another CA with a money order that was cashed 2 years earlier. After giving all the payment info to this 2nd CA, I hung up and thought I would call the first CA to see what the story was. The person was hesistant to help, but I insisted. After some minutes they came back and told me that they had put that payment towards a gas bill of mine. I knew that I had paid that as well(to a different CA) so I gave him that info and was told they would research and call me back. When I was called back he said that they did in fact post it to the gas bill. I never got a collection notice from this CA for the gas bill. It was a completely differnet one. He then said they would send me back my money and I should pay the electric company directly. He even gave me the address. Well no surprise, I never got that money back and no surpise either, this electric bill is showing on my credit report as unpaid. He told me not to worry about my credit report. Well I am. I am lost as to what to do. Any suggestions?

Do you have the proof of the gas bill paid to another collection agency? You need to show this to the collector and get your money back so that you can pay to this collection agency for the electric bill. You need to have all documentation to make sure that your payments are getting posted towards the account and the said CA is authorized for collecting on the unpaid account.

trophy, thank you. Yes, I have proof of both payments. I have very good documentation. Who do you think I should I be dealing with? Should I be sending all my info to the first CA? I have no idea why they (first CA) would have used my payment for a gas bill that they were not even collecting on and not for the electric bill that they were collecting on. ??????

I believe you should not have faced such problems if you had known the account for which the first CA was doing collections. It's good for you that you have everything in writing. The first CA cannot collect on your gas bill when you have already paid it to someone else. They need to refund back your money. If they don't, refer to an attorney.
