I just recently cleared my debt that I had and felt really great about it. I was able to even get credit from a few companies which was just to help get me back on track. However, I am now receiving calls from all types of collection/debt agencies for my sister-in-law. It scared me at first thinking do I still have some debt out there I dont know about? They never leave much information for you to go on so that you have no choice but to call and ask. When the collection agencies find out that the person does not live at that number they ask, "Do you know this person?" I of course say, "NO" and please take my number off your list. My sister-in-law doesn't even live in the same city as me! We just have the same last name. They say they will but I still get calls. I would like to know what I can do to have them stop calling me for someone else's debt.

You should not be receiving calls from the collectors after you have put it in writing. Send a cease and desist letter as mentioned in the fdcpa laws. They have to follow your request and stop contacting you in the future. See this sample letter and send it through certified mail with return receipt request. Once they have received your letter, they need to legally stop the calls

It really bites that I have to spend my own hard earned money to get a collection agency to stop calling me for someone else's mistake. Why are they even calling me to begin with?

Your sister in law might have used your name as a reference when she was applying for the loan. The CA got all the information from the creditor and that's the reason your number is being used to reach her. Stand strong and send the letter to the CA. They have to stop the calls after receiving your letter.

Do you know where your sister in law is? Perhaps, you can inform about the CA looking for her.

collection agencies also run checks on consumers that give them a list of people that are or might be related to the person they're trying to track down. These checks even give the CAs the names and phones numbers of neighbors that live by the person they're trying to get info on. So, if your sis-in-law didn't list you as a reference, this might be how the collector got your name and number.

Yes, I looked on one of those "people finder" websites. The data comes up with addresses, phone numbers (I didn't pay so I didn't see those), and a list of "possible relatives", I found a lot of those wrong, by entering in people I know. One thing I've found as well - if you have an unlisted non-published phone number, there's not much they can find on you.
