I recieved an automated call earlier from a law office asking to call back. I call them back and spoke to Anna Lomally who in turn tells me I have a bill from a Gulf South Medical Emergency room from 2004 in the amount of $241.00. I ask her if they will settle for a lower amount, she says yes, $175.00 but the offer is ONLY good for today and i MUST pay first then they will send me a letter stating Paid in Full. Of course, I'm weary and i tell her this. I also tell her i want to call an attorney to make sure this is legit collection. Suddenly the offer is good until tomorrow. I want something in writing first THEN i will consider the settlement offer. She says they can NOT generate another letter, which i never recieved the first one she says they sent. I got all the information from her, address, acct. number and such. So now my question is, where do i go from here? Validation, which i already KNOW this is my bill and i DO want to settle it.
Thanks for any help,
Bree

You agree that this is your debt but you need to make sure that the law firm is authorized to collect the debt from you. If you don't have anything in writing from them, some other company will call you later and insist you to pay on the same account. Then, you will have no proof of dealing with this law office.

This law firm is bound to follow the federal laws. Make them work in legal terms. Don't be taken away by their words. You should have everything on paper before sending the money.

So how do i do this? I tried to look them up online and it seems they do this a LOT. I thought it seemed funny that i had to make payment before they would agree on settlement in writing. Where do i go from here? I'd just like to clear this up once and for all. Thanks for any help.

Law Student, You mean get any agreement in writing "before" sending payment right? She insisted that i pay first then she'd send me something saying Paid in Full. Sounded fishy to me. I typed up the validation letter found up there and am going to send it out today. Seems like a lot for such a small amount but it's the principal!
Thanks for your help
