I guess if you want to look at it the nice way...everyone has to make a living somehow right? And if collecting is what someone is good at I guess you cannot begrudge them that. I personally work better with the kinder ones, once they start threatening me I am done with them for the most part. I don't mind paying a debt I owe but I sure won't be verbally assaulted in the process....

The ones that lie, threaten, break the law, etc., are probably the same ones that tortured animals and were bullies as kids. Psychologically, they probably have such a lack of control in their own lives, that the only way they feel in control is by taking out their aggression on the debtors they call every day. It makes them feel powerful.
I'm not defending these people in any way. Legitimate collectors, who treat the consumer with respect and follow the laws, are just doing one of the necessary duties involved in loaning money ... they are putting the creditor at ease that the money isn't walking away and never coming back. If it wasn't for the "courtesy call", a creditor trying to get you to make arrangments, then the first step after delinquency would be court.
For Kscornell, the problem with "ethical agencies" is that they want to hire collectors who produce results. On their end, they know they are probably not the only collectors calling the debtor. So when a debtor has 4 or 5 companies calling that all want money ... "the squeaky wheel gets the oil." Statistically, you will probably find that a collector who puts a little more pressure on the customer, will get paid faster than a collector who is overtly nice. For that reason, collection agencies are probably more apt to hire someone who is more aggressive than passive.

This will be my last comment in this thread. I only have one life to live, and I am not going to waste it by either being a victim to a collector, or by victimizing someone else by being a collector. When I die, I don't want to be remembered by being the collector who made a great living off of other people's plights. I want to be remembered for treating my fellow human beings with the respect and dignity in which we all deserve.

i have to disagree with debt cruncher on the overly aggressive dbt c/a being the one's who tortured pets ... from personal experience with the lily livered possums i worked with ... their the ones with low confidence and very little morale.
those of us who handle almost n/e thing thrown at us with nothing much more than S.O.P. 'uh huh ... so when u gonna start a small payment? ' we're the ones who don t give a damn about how much the debt is, if u ask for a settlement, we walk right into the bosses office, tell him what it is, demand negotiation, and refuse to move from the spot until he agrees or gives a damn good reason why i can't take the SIF.
i had a 2,000.00 account with an approved sif of 65 percent ... lady told me she was at work, now getting back on her feet after comin out of rehab... i was being monitored, so my floor manager was over my shoulders every 5 minutes telling me to wrap it up, she had no intention of paying etc etc.. i ignored the manager (much to her dismay, tried to get me suspended for it)i offered her the flat sif, knowing full well it would cause an arguement... but i did ask for bif first, no way she could do it ... she was looking for a second job, no kids but had rent and other bills to pay, she requested a 35 % sif ... 700.00 over 3 months via post dates ... well, since floor manager was being asinine...straight to office manager, give him all info, got cheque info.
bottom line is, it usually takes 2 to tango, most collectors don't instantly dial ur number and decide to be bitches... some of them just get tired of having to hear u say 'can i do it next month?' i've got so many things to do this month, or this is so old ... i don t owe it....
just like i understand most ppl in debt (lovingly referred to as debtors ... even tho they are ppl, like me and you) get tired of seeing the CA caller id come up 8-15 times a day, and hearing us tell them, payment is due today ... i know its not easy ... but trust me, American law protects u guys from so much .. compared to where i live ... lol.... debt collection down here, thats something else entirely ... they don t care what they do, who they offend and where u are, if u owe them money ... u can believe they will hunt u down, threaten ur employment, threaten ur apartment lease, threaten to take ur kids out of school, or make it difficult for u to get them into a good one, and heaven forbid they get ur address ... the collection letters may just get personally delivered if they think u were ignoring them... then they talk to the neighbours, or landlord ...
and ppl wonder why i hate this country... lol j/k

I beg to differ. If you dont owe the money then there is only 1 tangoing - the scam artist collector going through the phone book looking for similar names hoping someone is stupid enough to fall for it, or searching CRs in hopes of destroying ones credit so they are forced to pay to get their financial life back on track.
