If you have received letters from them, send them a request ofr debt validation. They will have to tell you who the original creditor is, how much is owed, etc. Then you can see if the debt is valid or not. If you have any questions, please ask..Karen

the letters i have recieved say that I owe money to a department store in new jersey. I never lived in new jersey except for my sister and i believe that she had stolen my social security number to purchase a credit card and never paid what she owed.

Abarrientos-- as a person in the collection industry, I read your post and wonder why you would take 10 mins to type these posts rather than 2 minutes to call the agency and find out what is going on. If it is a retail card, the balance is probably low enough that the agency isn't going to interrogate you too long. The lower the balance, the less time is invested in the account. End your mystery and just call them.

I would call them and asked them what it is all about? Then ask for an address and send a debt validation letter. Once they validate the debt, dispute it, let them know exactly what you told us here, that you never lived in New Jersey and that you are not responsible for the debt. Make sure they give you account details, like account number, date opened, address open to, etc. You will need this information to pursue your case. You can also ask them how they handle a situation like this. You may have to file a police report on your sister if you believe she opened the account in your name. Goodluck!

If you are certain that this debt is not yours, call the agency and let them know that this account is most probably fraudulent.Discuss the procedures they have in place for this event. If the agency is unwilling to assist you in this matter, post back and I will guide you to the hardball method of disputing/removing id theft accounts.
