This does not mean the debt isn't valid, and they can continue trying to collect, it is just that legally they cannot pursue it. Send them a debt validation letter and have them validate the detb. All of the above posts are correct. If this was in 2000, unless you live in Ohio, no doubt the SOL has run. You are under no obligation at all. They can still try to collect, but it is way too late for them to seek any legal action. I would send the above mentioned validation letter, stating, "please tell me how you have calculated what you say I owe, and all evidence that I am contractually obligated to you for this alleged debt on which the statute of limitations has run."
