Question on old debt - no on credit reports anymore
Date: Tue, 04/17/2007 - 10:41
I printed out all three of my credit reports and this account is not on any of them. It doesn't show up at all, not in the adverse account area and not in the account in good standing area. It just isn't there.
I also looked at all three of my credit reports that I had printed out in March of 2006 and didn't see the account on any of them either.
Again, I THINK I paid this off but I don't have 10 year old financial records.
What should I do?
thanks to anyone and everyone for their advice.

If you can find the records, you will put yourself in a better position because you will have a proof to show to the CA. First ask the CA to validate the account in writing. You need to know about their genuine collections and they have your accurate account details. After you have got the details, write a dispute letter mentioning your point and the debt is too old to be reported in your credit report now. In case, you make a payment unknowingly, they will give a new look to this entire situation and report the item negatively in your credit file. Be aware of the laws and your legal rights.

Those debt buyer must indeed be getting desperate. More and more of these "debts" from the 1990s are turning up. Anyway, if you call them you'll probably get nothing more than a circular argument of rubbish. As cajun said, send them a letter requesting that they verify the validity of this debt, on which the statute of limitations has run.
