I am being harassed by collection agencies over debt that was charged off over 5 years ago. How do I let them know that they can't collect due to my states statute of limitations. Can I send them a letter without getting a lawyer. I don't want to do a bankrupty unless I have to.

CA will continue to collect even if the debt is past the SOL. However, they cannot sue you for not paying the amount. Write a dispute letter notifying the expiry of the statutes and to stop all collection attempts. You don't need to hire a lawyer in doing this. Send the letter through US mail with return receipt requested.
