Correct me if I am wrong but the SOL means that they cannot sue you but that you still owe the debt...

CA will continue to collect even if the debt is past the SOL. However, they cannot sue you for not paying the amount. Write a dispute letter notifying the expiry of the statutes and to stop all collection attempts. You don't need to hire a lawyer in doing this. Send the letter through US mail with return receipt requested.
