If they can't validate, they can't collect.
If they can't collect, they can't make entries on your credit report. Don't expect the letter writing to be a rapid solution, it often isn't.

You may also want to consider holding on the phone. I suspect that you are a non-payer to the collectors, and they don't want to talk to you. Maybe you can keep calling too, maybe you'll find a person who's willing to help you out. Maybe you can talk to a supervisor, too.
