Credit Bureau Scores

Does anyone truley understnad how credit breau scores work. My lender is saying that I need a score of 560 but my score is 548 they are allowing me to solve some of my bad credit by paying it off how many accounts do I need to pay off before the score goes up or is it a dollar amount?
