I have been writing letters to the credit bureaus to validate collection accounts that are not mine. I received responses that the accounts have been validated. I then sent letters to the collection agencies asking for proof of the debt signed contracts etc and received no response. I did receive on statement from a collection agency that was simply on their letterhead, my ss# and an address listed I had never heard of with an amount due. I then listed all these accounts in a letter to the bureaus with a small paragraph of the collection account, what I asked for (signed contract) and the fact the collection agency has not contacted me. I also listed the Fair debt collections practices act. This was done at the beginning of April. Anyone know of a better way to get their attention?

Anthony, nice website. Those letters are very good, even quoting appropriate case law. I like your blog as well.

robee31, as to credit reporting agencies, you'll almost have to follow Anthony's advise with the letters. Their validation is really a joke. They ask the "creditor", the "creditor" says "yes, he owes us $x", and the reporting agency tells you it is "validated" or "verified". I would, if I were you, sue if there are things on your CR which have not been properly validated.

Thanks for the link for the letters. Just an update I called one of the collection agencies in reference to a car insurance account that I supposedly had? I asked for them to provide me with a declarations page. I was deeply concerned that they had an address on file for me I have never lived at, much less lived in the same city. They explained they did a name search for me. That is how they had that information if this is the case, I really feel sorry for John Smith.
