Asset and Bally: HELP

I am, like so many other people, are now dealing with Asset and their unwillingness to help anyone. My husband in 2005 signed up for a membership with bally total fitness. I also worked there ( when we were still dating) as the front desk receptionist. I was trained by the front desk manager and the GM of the store. I was told specifically what to tell customers when they wanted to cancell there contracts and who they should contact. my husband was told he had 30 days ( which is what i was trained to say to people) to cancell his membership without penalties as long as he didnt use the gym. within two weeks we went back to the guy who drew up his contract to tell him we needed to cancell, he got accepted to a local University and had full acces to their gym for baseball, thus did not need Bally anymore. We were told my the contract signer that everything would be taken care of and the paper work would be sent off the next day. i went into work the next day and sat down with this man to ask him if he had it ready and he informed me it was in my DHL pack to send out that day.n........2 years later we start getting phone calls from Asset telling us we owe them money. We have called everyone we can think of to call and no one in that company seems to be able to help us. THEY DONT CARE! you should have known that he wasnt telling the truth when he told you it was 30 days, it was only 5 days and you had to use the gym 5 times and have a free workout with a personal trainer and pay 50 dollars and male the paperwork YOURSELF! if we had known that ( and not to mention all those hundreds of people i told that too while i worked there, god help those people) dont you think we would have dont that...DUH! now we are stuck, we do not know what to do. we had no idea this has happened until we were moving out of our apartment trying to rent a town house and was denied, now we are living with my parents because we cannot get ANYTHING!. no one seems to be able to help us. Everyone at Bally is covering there own butts saying they never said that ( of course they didnt, they would lose their jobs if they did) and Asset is saying there is nothing we can do we have to suck it up and pay it.
HELP! we have no idea what to do next. Im sorry this is so long but i wanted you to know the whole story to offer advice on. Thank you
