My wife ended up having our baby when I was between jobs and insurance had not kicked in until right after... as a result I ended up paying by cash on most all procedures. I am now trying to work through the bills that came as a result of the emergency c-section, extra hospital stay, etc... Part of that went to West Assest Management. I read that you recommend not dealing with them directly. How would I go about that? Any other ideas on dealing with the medical debt? They all want everything all at once of course.

I have had more than my share of medical debt, never dealt with them. I would try & contact the medical provider first, to see if you can make payment arrangements. One of the things I always tell them is "I have many bills, and only so much money to spread around, so the minimum payment I can pay on this is $xxx. If there are times I can pay more, I will, but at this time that is all I can do." I am currently paying $40 month on one of my sons bills. Also have you tried to contact financial aid at the hospital? Most hospitals have one and they may be able to help. My hospital wants you to apply for public aid first, then if you are denied, they will help you. It is worht a shot. But I will tell you that they do show up on your credit report, I have 2 that were paid in full, but still show "collections, PIF" good luck - and the most important part is that you have a new little one!!
