No, they damn well can't report it any way the please. They have to report what actually happened, the way it happened, or they're in violation of federal law. Period.
Call Experian. Explain to them what happened, that the debt was improperly reported, and that you have proof of all that. You may have to send them the proof, but they should set it right.
In your place, I might even be tempted to demand it be removed altogether. But I can be a vindictive old bastrich. Give it a few hours on here, and see what answers you get.

If found in violation they may be taken to court via civil suit (typically small claims) for $1,000 per violation. I would suggest contacting an attorney. Additionally if the consumer credit reporting agencies which they reported to fail to adjust they may also be sued, consult an attorney before doing so.
