being contacted by collection agencies and debt collectors

I know this is a constantly asked question, but I need a good, accurate answer. I understand the job of a debt collector is to, well, collect. By that, they call and write and harass the hell out of you until they get what they want. I understand they could care less about your personal life or anything else, but I am in Nashville, TN, and its 2:00 AM, and I swear a debt collector tried calling me like an hour ago. They call me before I wake up, while I'm sleeping, while I'm working, when I'm at church, I could be at a funeral, and I bet I couldn't set through it without them calling. I am working to pay off my debt with them as best as possible, but is their any laws or protection for consumers that have debt in collections when it comes to the time and frequency that these people call? I mean it is really unnecessary, and I would label it as pure harassment. I just would like a good, accurate answer from anyone that knows. Thank you for your help!

Well it is illegal for them to call you outside of the times 8am-9pm (I think that is the time..I may be off by an hour or so). It is also illegal for them to constantly place calls to you in one day, now mind you, this means that if they call and you talk to them, they can't keep calling that same day or even the enxt day...that constitutes harassment.

You also have the option of sending them a cease & desist letter...once you do that they can only contact you once more to inform you that they taking a specific action, then after that it is illegal for them to call (or write) at all....BUT that way could get you sued much faster if you leave them no other choice.

It is true..these collectors do not give a flip about you or me. There are those that will use whatever means necessary to get money out of you. There are collectors out there that follow the laws, but even those will call you every couple of days. (everyday almost if they can never get a hold of you)
