My question is in reference to a medical bill from November 2007. I was waiting on my IRS refund to pay it but it went to collections two weeks ago, balance is $225.00. I want to pay the hospital but not sure if I should send them a check for the balance with my last statement from March and see if they accept it or should I not bother with them and deal with the collection agency? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the Community :D I have had to pay hospital bills for many years with my son and have run across this. What I did was to first contact the original creditor and talk with them about where to send the payment. I made a copy of my payment and the letter saying I was paying account number xx off in the amount of xx dollars for a paid in full account.

I never had any problems doing this, but the CA that collect for hospitals and medical here, are local and have always worked with me..karen

Thank you all for your advice. I did call the hospital and apparently the collection agency that contacted me is still part of the hospital billing. They are an internal collections and found out they haven't reported anything to CA yet...Whew! :D I will call them today and make the payment over the phone so it should be fine. I have worked SO hard to avoid any negative reports on my cr (in addition to the ones that are already there) for so many years. I have several med bills from 8 years ago that I fought with the hospital over (my son had to go to ER room THREE times over one weekend because they didn't treat him right the first AND second time which is completely their fault) and also bad credit from borrowing money to pay for a divorce/custody battle when my ex decided to remove me from our bank account while I was a stay home mom. Started in the red and it's taken me forever to catch up but that old debt still haunts me. Sorry for the rambling, I really appreciate your help and appreciate the site as well. I learned a few things and my next step will be sending letters to these collections agencies sending me notices for debts over 14 years old. Thanks again!

Oh yes...I had one call me up on an old Bally's account that was inaccurate to begin with! AND it was almost 20 years ago! I asked the man if he was taking drugs. :) He tried to give me a line of bull on how since they own the account now it is a 'new' account and that not only will it go on my credit report, but he will sue me. I simply told him, "You go ahead and do so..I will see you in court." :)

Yup a fitness club....I paid the initial due, then had 30 days to cancel...I did cancel within the time and had not heard anything for a few years until i started getting harassed by collectors. Then I never heard anything till just recently...I really did have to laugh, I had that CA stuttering and sputtering. :)
