What does account or balance "cancelled and returned" mean?

Does anyone know what this means and how it affects my credit score? I suspect it could still be a problem. If it is, what remedy should I demand from the former creditor/CA?
Thanks

Cancelled and returned means that the account has been cancelled in their system and returned to the client.

Thanks very much for the response, but do you know how that action affects my credit score? Or does it perhaps mean that the entry no longer exists at all in my credit file?

If you opened a new credit account and were given a higher interest than you would have been given had this not been on your credit report you could file suit against the doctors office for damages. I would pull all of your credit reports again to verify this is not on them. If it still shows in any manner I would recommend talking with an atty over what you need to do and file a small claim against both the doctors office and the collection agency (CA since they did not verify the debt prior to attempting collection upon the said account).

Check your credit file. If it is there, dispute it with the credit bureau. Send them a copy of the letter that says it is canceled and returned, and a copy of the paid in full letter from the original creditor and it should be fixed right away.
