I am hoping I can get some advice. I am currently trying to clean up my credit report. I recently ran a report and have a bunch of old debt/collection agencies on my report. Needless to say a few years ago I hit a rough patch and piled up some debt. I moved a few times and do not have record of these debts from the collection agencies. I realized some of these may be legit and I do want to make arrangements and clear them up. However, I think some seem fishy. I think I understand the process and I am hoping to confirm I am correct. I found a sample validation letter and my plan is to send this validation letter to each collection account to verify that it is my debt and that the amount is correct and they have the right/and are legal to collect in Florida. Most of the accounts are anywhere from 2005 till 2008. Am I able to send the validation letter now? I noticed a few things online about having to do it as soon as the agency takes the account? If they do not reply in 30 days can I send this as proof to the CRA's that they are not respondind and they must remove the debt then?? Advice is greatly appreciated.

Go ahead and send your letters, but the collectors are not required to "validate" per the FDCPA unless you have never had any contact from them before, recently or in the past. Keep that credit report, send your dispute letters to these debt collectors via certified mail, and if the accounts are not corrected or updated, then you may have a claim against the collectors (and eventually the credit bureaus), if incorrect information is not corrected or deleted. Good luck!
