AFNI All Over The Place
Date: Wed, 07/01/2009 - 16:33
Please! Help me understand this!
I signed up for the Equifax 3in1 trial and everything on my CR was to be expected except for this AFNI stuff all over the place.-- And oh, have I read all about AFNI and their zombie debt collection attempts.
I should say that some months ago I received a letter about a Verizon account from the mid-90s that this collection agency was willing to settle for $126. Being so far SOL (and that, IF there was an unsettled Verizon bill from 1996, it was disputed to begin with), I threw the letter away. Besides, I set up a Verizon Wireless account two years, no problem -- in fact, their inquiry is on my report.
Also, according to my Experian report that I looked at back in May, this AFNI account was "scheduled to continue on record until Jun 2009."
Though it claimed this collection account was past due as of Oct. 2007, I didn't bother arguing that it was inaccurate or had obviously been re-aged because I figured it was going to fall off my CR shortly anyway.
Thus excited that AFNI might be gone, today I look at my3in1 report and see this (the abridged versions, I would've copied and pasted but canceled my membership before thinking of posting here):
Under OTHER ACCOUNTS/OPEN ACCOUNTS:
Transunion (nothing in the Equifax or Experian columns)
Acct. Type: Open
Date Opened: 12/2006 (no way! I did not open a Verizon account in 2006 -- Confused)
Balance Date: 10.2007
Balance Amount: $126
High Limit: $126
Account Status: Collection (so why does my report also say later on that I have nothing in collections? -- Confused)
Comments: Original Creditor: 10 Verizon Collection Account
AFNI: [address and phone number]
24 Month Payment History: No 24 Month Payment History
Under OTHER ACCOUNTS/CLOSED ACCOUNTS:
Experian (nothing in the TransUnion column)
Acct. Type: Installment (WTF? -- Confused)
Date Opened: 12/2006
Balance Date: 10/2007
Balance Amount: $126
High Limit: $126
Account Status: Collection
Comments: Last reported delinquencies 10/2007=I Original Creditor: Verizon Collection Account
* And the 24-Month Payment History shows Oct. 07 under the CO (charge off?) column and NRs for Sept.07 to Nov.05
In the Equifax Column
Acct. Type: OPEN (WTF? Again! -- Confused)
Date Opened: Blank!
Balance Date: 10/2007
Balance Amount: $126
High Limit: $126
Account Status: Collection
Comments: Collection Account
Nothing in the 24-month payment history here.
This stuff obviously also appears under NEGATIVE ITEMS.
Should I be writing DV letters? Can I get this stuff off? I have no proof and, not to preach to the choir, why is it so easy for a CA to put this stuff in your CR and so damn hard for the consumer to get it off.
Eargh! And thank you!

You should send debt validation letter to the creditors and at the same time send dispute letter to the credit bureau asking them to remove the listing from your report. If they do not remove it from your report, file a complaint with the FTC, since both the creditors and the bureaus are responsible to remove incorrect listings from your report. You can find sample letters if you visit the link debt settlement letters.
