I am a bit behind on a couple credit cards. I have been trying to ignore them, hoping they will go away. But this is a stupid idea, and I figure it won't work. On one I possibly owe about $900, and another about $500. So, I want to pay them and have this in my past, but I want to make sure it's done right.

I received a call from Praxis, stating that they are collecting for HSBC (Orchard Bank). I received a collection notice from them about a month and a half ago. In it, it states the usual, that if I don't dispute within 30 days, this debt is considered valid. However, from what I read here, everyone says request a validation of debt before you send money. Since I am past this 30 days stated in the collection letter, can I still request this?

I want to take care of this, but I also want to take advantage of my rights, and want to be sure I'm paying the right person, and not some scum.

Thanks!

I had to answer this question. If I am not mistaken (Praxis) is an actual test that teachers take that certify them to teach. Somebody might've gotten (meaning stored) your card information. Check with some of the places you have used the card. But on the brighter side you may be eligible for more credit. Just try to find out.
