I think it depends on your situation. Are you behind on your payments? Once I had fallen behind by over 30 days, they did offer me a hardship program. I know that the program wasn't quite as good as what was offered by my other creditors, but I don't remember the exact details of it.

I will be behind officially beginning next week. Granted, it will only be by a few days until the beginning of next month but I don't see an end in sight. I foresee being 30 days behind for a long time. That's why I am asking. Others, on other forums, have told me that collections was very good about working with them. But if you call Amex directly, they won't work with you at all.

I found AmEx collections to be very reasonable. I did find with all of my creditors that it was better to just wait and let them contact me. I tried sending letters to all of them before we actually fell behind, but most of them just said that I didn't qualify for any of their programs. However, once I fell behind and their collections departments started calling, then most of them offered hardship programs. Since I wasn't able to commit to any of their programs, I don't remember the exact details of what was offered, but I do remember that the collections department was very professional and quite reasonable. When they call you, I would just explain your situation to them and ask them if they have any hardship programs that you might qualify for.

alias1958,
were you harrassed by them at all? threatened with lawsuits? Most things I've heard about the Amex collections has been like your experience. but legal action is what worries me the most.
thanks---

Kristin, no I wasn't harrasssed or threatened at all by them. I did have a couple of other creditors who moved my accounts to their litigation departments, prior to our Chapter 7 filing, but Amex never did. I haven't figured out what criteria these creditors use to determine whether they will file a lawsuit, but I think it depends on many factors, so your case may or may not be the same.
