Amex recently sent my account to collections because we're behind on payments. We've had at least 3 different agencies contact us so far.

I don't want to enter into any kind of agreement with these collection agencies - can I continue to pay down the debt by paying Amex directly, or do I have no choice but to engage these bottom-feeding collection agencies?

They will generally refer you back to the CA since they have entered a contract with them and since they would have to pay the CA a % of the debt anyway, they would prefer you pay the CA directly. If you have documented violations of the FDCPA, it may give you some leverage to have AMEX pull the debt back.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Since I've had at least 3 CA's call I'm guessing that they've not sold the debt. When I received the letter from Amex, they referenced a URL ("waytopay") that they said was a way for me to pay the balance in full - the URL sends me to their regular online payment system. Does this make a difference?

As long as the debt hasnt been sold you can always pay the AMEX. They still own the debt so they will take the payments. You dont have to deal with the agency at all UNLESS there is a chance they could seek judgment on this. But in ALL circumstances you can pay the creditor anytime unless the debt was sold.
