We are being sued by 2 collection companies and want to enlist the help of a lawyer. I would like help in what to ask them when I am making the first call to them. I know I need to ask how much they charge and such, but I would appreciate any input as to what else I need to ask.

Thanks in advance...

Apart from the fee, you should ask the attorney about the are of his/her specialization. Ask whether or not he/she has dealt with similar cases. Ask him about the overall cost of the case and the time frame within which the case is expected to resolve. Ask whether or not the attorney will be available after hours and will he handle your case solely?

Do you owe the debts? Are they within SOL? Have they been sold off or does the OC still own the debt?

What are you expecting an attorney to do? If you owe the debt and it is within SOL, there is not much an attorney can do for you. If you do the research, you can save yourself a ton of cash.

If you truly owe the debts, then it's your obligation to pay them off. If the debts are within the SOL, then a lawsuit can be filed against you.

So, during your first call you have the responsibility to explain the entire situation to the attorney. Show him through your current financial obligations and give him a true picture of your actual financial strength. This will help him to guide you in a much better way.
