Several years ago I had to go to the emergency room. I had no insurance and I never received a bill from the hospital. One year to the date of my hospital visit I get a letter from a collection agency. I had no money so I ignored it, they never hassled me. A year later I got a letter that was suppose to look like it came from an attorneys office offering to accept 50% of the bill and call it paid in full. At this time I had a little money. I paid it and it has never showed up on my credit report.

About two years ago I had to have some blood work done and the cost was almost ten times higher then what I paid another hospital 20 miles away. I was outraged that the price could be that much higher from hospital to hospital. I have not yet paid or made any payments on the bill.

I could pay it in full with no problems, but I am one of those who stick to principles come hell or high water.

The account is on my credit report and is now with a collection agency who has never notified me by mail but calls every day. (my credit is still listed as good BTW)

The total is less then $1000. The collector has yet to make any threats, their messages say they "have a decision to make and would like my input... yada yada yada...."

Question: Do I offer them less money or do I wait and see if they make me an offer?

When you got the outrages bill did you call and ask why it was so high? This is something you should have done right away. It could be that the work was more in depth then the test taken 20 miles away. Now that you waited so long it is effecting you credit report. Send a DV letter to the collection agency and ask for proof they own the debit. If indeed they do then I would make them an offer to settle.
