I was contated by united legal and was told they would send my information to the local authorities if i did not pay the amount owed. I sent them a payment for 400 dollars and have not yet received any reciept as promised. Can then send my information to local authorities to process a criminal action against me?

PinkLady,

As per our conversation they say I still owe them 400 more as they say. I asked for a written receipt and they have not maield it to me, I do have the receipt of the 400 I sent them over money gram. Can they contact the authorities in my state?

You need to ask them what company they are collecting for. If they are nice enough to tell you that, then I would call that original company and verify what collection company has your account. DO NOT SEND ANOTHER DIME. I pretty sure whatever company you defaulted with did not give them the account with a 800 dollar balance. When I got the crazy call they tried to get me to send 700 when my account with the original creditor was only around 315. Tell them you demand to see something on paper and by law they have to give that to you. If and when you receive another call before you start the conversation tell them you are recording the calls.

Pink Lady has is absolutely right- don't send them another penny! They won't contact the authorities in your state because 1)It's not legal and 2)you already gave them $400, so even if it was legal, they couldn't exactly say that you've refused all attempts at communication and payment or anything. Again, Pink Lady is right- DEMAND that they send you a debt validation letter and disclose what creditor they are collecting for. If they give you a hard time about it, then you should inform them that YOU will be pressing criminal charges against THEM and seeking a full refund of the $400 you just paid them.
