Did collections scam me or was this legitimate?

Today end of day I get a call from Client Services stating the bank pulled the account back because most likely they had completed the legal investigation and she needed a $50 payment to show activity so they could pull the account back and that Citi probably didn't know that we were working on a settlement.
I only had $10 in my account and I said that I would have to try to put some money in my account so I could make the payment and would call back. In the mean time Client Services said they were going to try and reactivate the account.
When I called back they had already reactivated the account and I stupidly gave them my checking account number so they could take a check payment over the phone.
My husband is panicked that they now have access to the account and will continue to pull money out which is money that we still need to pay bills with. I don't believe they have a judgment against or have gone to court as I have never received any type of paperwork in the mail.
Has anyone heard of or know about this scenario and is it legitimate do banks pull accounts back from Collections???
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

If the collection agency is only appointed to carry on the collection activities (the account isn't charged off and the bank still retains its rights over it) on behalf of the bank, the bank have the discretion to take the account back from the CA.
Who is this collection agency?

Hof, the collection agency is Client Services Inc. The other weird thing is that once we agreed upon a settlement amount, (my MIL is paying the settlement) they wanted financial info, how much we pay for bills each month. Is this also normal?

no it is not normal.i would try to reach CITI myself and fill them in.the only way they should still be contacting is if you don't pay as agreed.it is also a big red flag that you haven't received anything in writing.again contact CITI,and find out if client services was assigned the debt,or bought the debt.if they bought the debt demand the agreement in writing,or send them a DV letter instead of money.the fact that they want further financial info is a red flag to me.

The $50 payment went thru my account today and the debtor was citibank, so I am feeling like she was telling the truth so far??
I think I haven't recvd anything in writing because client services inc was preparing a report to submit to citibank for settlement approval.
When I first received the collections call I did call citibank directly and see if they sold the account and I was told Client Services Inc is working on their behalf.
I should have a yes/no settlement answer next week. In the mean time I will read up on what I should expect to see in writing for the settlement.
Thanks.
