I defaulted on a loan like 7 years ago. The CA is sending me a letter trying to collect, but I am in no shape to pay it. I'm in CA. Can they take me to court?

Glad, the SOL is 4 years in California. Your Credit Report should show the date that the item will be removed from the report. it can only stay on the report for 7 1/2 years from date of last pay. So that should be coming up soon.
Send the CA a DV letter that states that the SOL has expired and request that they prove the validity of the debt.

Yes they can still collect until it is resolved even after it falls off of your credit report, but if the SoL is expired they can't sue you for it.
