I am having a problems with a collection agency. They keep calling me and my family even though the debt has been paid. They claim that I still have an amount owing. The calls are getting harassing and also to the point of threatening. Do I have any rights to get them to stop? Thank-you for your help

Before I left the apartment they provided me with an amount owing. I left a check for that amount owing the day that I left. I have not ask for accounting as frankly I am not wanting to get involved in this. The collection agency has been rude and keep stressing "time urgency". I paid what I owed according to the complex at the time and am in another country now.

If you have proof of what you owed the day you paid in writing and a copy of the check for that amount then the only thing you need to do is have everyone they are contacting send a cease and desist letter to stop all calls as the person they are looking for does not reside at that phone number.

Either way you are out of the country so there is not much they can do anyway. If you are in the military they will have to state that in the letter.....If you do not have any proof you paid the amount owed, it would be kind of hard to send a debt validation letter but it couldn't hurt.
