But this is the first time a collector has called before 8am and I'm not sure if I should do something to follow up since they violated the fdcpa? Can you get money for something like this if it's just one time?

A collection agency can't call you before 8am. They have thus violated FDCPA laws. You can either file lawsuit or contact attorney or complain to Federal Trade Commission.
In case of CA harassment you can also take the following steps: -
Call them back and inquire about the debt they are calling for. Keep the conversation short and simple and don't linger it to any payment negotiation. Then send a DV letter through CRRR.

If it's only been one time, a lawyer ain't going to pick up the case. Trust me. Have they called your cell number before 8am multiple times? If you have, then you have a stronger case, even with recorded time stamps etc.
I'd keep a running list of times etc that they call you after a
week,if they continue to call before 8am, then contact a lawyer/FTC etc, you'll have a stronger case.

Yes, it's only been the one time so far. That has been the only call I received before 8am from any collection company actually. That is what I was wondering, if an attorney would bother if it just the one time. But really one time violates the law..but maybe that is why they did it..
Just one time and nothing is going to happen to them and maybe they get lucky and I actually answer since it's before 8am.
Maybe I'll just file a complaint with the FTC. Nothing will come of it, but will make me happy to stick it to them even just a little bit! :D

There is a reason collectors keep breaking FDCPA laws and that is because people just think "its only once" and dont do anything. File with the FTC, BBB and Attny General and go to Civil Court for up to 1000.00 in damages. It is harrassment if it is 1 time or 300 times. I won a case for 1 phone call. thats all it takes. Dont let these scumbags get away with it!!

My guess is that it's probably a collector calling from out of state or even out of the country and is too dense to figure out the time difference. Still, document every time you get this early-morning wakeup call and be sure and report it!

This is an easy on to handle without an attorney. Send them a letter with your proof, quoting the FDCPA and give them a deadline to pay you your $1000. Threaten to contact your AG office and FTC. I got paid out on this type of one time vioation twice.
