summons

Hello..I received a court summons not to appear but to respond in order to have a chance to appear and defend. It is a collection attorneys office called gurstel chargo and siding on behalf of capital one. I don't deny owing capital one 1000.00 but am being sued for 1542. Which I am sure is because of fees and interest. I was trying to save up to do a settlement offer but am being sued before I could. It has been less than a year since I stopped paying capital one. After reading in these forums I responded to the summons and sent a debt validation letter to gurstel chargo.
My question is will gurstel chargo send me the debt validation and to the court and if they do send it to me and they are validly collecting can I still call them and try to settle out of court?
