cashcall and thinkcash.com are they both underwritten by same bank ?
neither are PDL loans ?
which means they can be scary and have teeth ?

yes. My dad gets SSI disability and some how managed to get loans from both these awful companies. (1 -1000 2- 1500 !)
All he did was fill out forms, no one even verified on the phone.
Im trying to get a heloc for him to pay them off but am wondering if we should close his Checking act first and then pay them via certified mail

Are they currently doing ACH payments out of your checking account? If so, no company can "force" you to pay them by ACH...per the Electronic Funds Transfer Act.

If you are considering this, you would need to let them know you are revoking their ACH rights and that you will be paying them through mail.

Certified mail can add up $$...is the issue that your dad is having trouble making the payments?

I do not know about ThinkCash, but I do know something about CashCall. What you might want to do is to call your rep at CashCall to see if they can lower your Dad's payment and interest rate. Just tell them that is is on Social Security and can not afford the current payment amount. Before the assign your father's loan to abrituation, they want to make sure that you are having some financial problems. Also depending on your father's age he may be able to get a reverse mortgage to pay off these two companies. Make sure that you contact an attorney before you make any decisions and good luck.

Cash Call can be scary. What was the amount your dad was approved for? Usually the % is 90% or even higher. They MAY 'help' lower your %. They may tell you "they have no obligation to do this..blah..blah." You CAN 'revoke' your ACH with Cash Call. They do take Money Gram. I don't think it's a fee.
