I am an international student who just completed by masters degree and accumulated about 5000 dollars in credit card debt to pay for school and expenses. Now I am unable to find a job in the US because of my status and the economy and am very worried about my future.

I am probably going to have to be forced to go back to my home country soon and might have to default on my credit cards but really don't want to have to do that as it would be morally wrong. Does anyone have any tips on how I can settle the debt, perhaps by negotiating a lower balance or a long term payment plan from abroad with the credit card company?? I would really appreciate all your help. Thanks!

I would call them and tell them exactly what you just told us. You should ask to speak to a manager of course as the people who answer the phone are useless when it comes to decisions. They can either work with you or take a complete loss. I do have to say it is nice to hear you say you want to pay it back, this is rare in this day and time.

I would make any arrangement that you can. I believe that once you leave the country, they cannot pursue collections. However, as you said, you have a moral obligation to pay, (which is a good thing). You could always make payments later when you get established and employed in your home country. As for right how, if you do not have the money, there is nothing they can do to force you to pay. I am sure that given these unusual circumstances, they will work out an arrangement with you.
