I fell on some hard times last year and couldn't continue paying on my credit cards so of course I fell behind. About 6-8 months ago I changed my phone number, it's unlisted and it's not in my name, nor is it in the name of a relative. Recently I started getting collection calls at this number- how the heck are they getting the number? I am very careful when giving this number out. Only a few family members have it and my doctors office. I don't even use this number on my bank account or anything. How are they finding it? I hate to have to change the number again but I can't deal with these calls 12 hours a day everyday!

Ever heard of a cease and desist letter?

However be cafreful who you send them too....some creditors are very agressive and cease and desisting will send you straight to court. Changing phone numbers for some could do it too. They know when debtors are hiding or ditching them. Insteading of ignoring or hiding from them, you should be communicating with them.

I have to admit I would wonder the same thing you do about how they got your phone number. If you are getting so many calls or when you do talk to someone they don't hear what your saying the next choice is to have them leave you alone and I can't really blame you for trying.

I recently had my number changed because I changed carriers and for the most part its been quiet not having the phone ringing all the time.

If you do deal with collections, i prefer to do it in writing, that way I have records. For one thing it takes forever to get through to them, even when they robo call you they put you on hold and F-that is my feelings about that.

So I stick to writing so they don't be fictionalizing what I had to say and I got a record of everything. Although word is out depending on the state you live in you can record a phone conversation without the other party knowing (if, of course, you are not doing so in order to scam them or do something illegal) so you can make a record that way too.

It's not that I am simply trying to dodge them. I have explained numerous times to them the situation which is that I became disabled, have no source of income and I'm playing the long waiting game to get Social Security Disability. In the mean time I have no money- not a red cent, sometimes not even enough to get food. My sister sends me money for groceries, I lost my home last year and now live with a friend. I tried sending the letters before I changed my number and it didn't seem to work. It also seems as though the same bills have different collectors trying to collect for them if that makes any sense. Like I will get a call from AMEX, then a call from XYE Co, collecting on behalf of AMEX, and another call from ABC Co collecting for AMEX. I can barely keep track of what goes to who and who's calling about what and from where. My health is not good and I just don't have the strength or energy to deal with these numerous harassing calls. If they want to take me to court, fine but there will be nothing for them to take or garnish.

Well you won't get any argument from me that they have negative effect on health. Lord knows this predators that are after me, I swear sometimes I just feel like I'm living on the edge. And the vexing part about it is ITS NOT MY DEBT. Still the system allows it to go on harassing me, taking up my time.

they wouldn't care if you were on your deathbed, they would hound you anyway, they have no shame.
