What are the consequences of sending a cease and desist letter? What about if the letter says, I will work with the original creditor to resolve this debt but I will not work with you, the debt collector?

It depends on what you say in the letter. If you write "No further contact is to be made by phone or mail" then they will not be "allowed" to contact you at all. If you write "No further contact is to be made by the phone and only through mail" then they will only (or should only) contact you through the mail. Many times if your debt is already with a collection agency you won't be allowed to work with the original debtor. What you could try is to contact the original debtor and work out a payment plan then start sending them payments. I'd try that.

Good luck!
