collecting an old debt

I need some advice. I had a CA call to tell me that they were collecting a debt a had with Citi back in 2002. They tried to tell me that Citi was trying to collect, but when pressed, they admited they were a collection agency. They offered a settlement. I am very leery of this because I had a terrible experience in the past. I was offered a settlement which I paid, and then the company kept telling me that they needed more money. I sent them more money, and then they tried again. They left me a message that I should get an attorney.
I called them and told them that I had already spoken to the AG in Texas, and that I was ready to call the AG in Georgia (where they were located) if they did not send me a letter saying that my account was paid. They sent the letter, but it is still appearing on my credit report. How can I deal with this new company, so that it does not happen again?
