Here's the deal in a nutshell. I have had a personal loan with Citifinancial since August 2007. I've been paying it off, every month, NO payments missed. That's none missed. What has happened is some late fees have accrued. That was from when I was mailing them in. Then, I started just making time to go by the branch and pay in person. Well, I go in on Monday of this week to make my monthly payment, and I am just floored by what happens. First, the rep tells me to "hold on a moment". He then vanishes into the back. He returns and hands me my check back. He tells me that he must now inform me that "Citifinancial does not accept partial payments". And to return when I have all the money. Well, I then ask what in the world he means by that. He then flips his computer screen around to show me the late fees that had built up from some late payments here and there. And because of that, the amount is more than what a regular monthly payment would be. Well, I hand him the check back and tell him that I will get those late fees on the next go round.

He then says that that is not how it works. You owe it today. And then he hands the check back again. About that time, a big bouncer looking guy comes from the back to ask if there is a problem. He gets REAL close to me, as if to try and scare me. His fists are clinched. I inform him that if he does not cease with these intimidation tactics, I will return with a police officer. He says "do it". Well, I went ahead and wrote a new check to include the late fees. Then, the guy returns to the back of the office. I am furious by this point. The rep then informs me that due to the bad economy, Citifinancial has "hired guns" whose job it is to be on site to try and intimidate people into paying up. He didn't say that in so many words, but conveyed that message in a round about way. Is this even legal? The rep told me before I left "hey, you owe us, not the other way around". He then compliments me on not having missed any payments, but then says that payment of late fees is just as important. I then inform him that every trip I make into that branch from here on will be with a cop by my side. He chuckles under his breath. Seriously, what the hell? Has the bad economy really turned every financial institution into thugs? What's next, a horse's head in my bed?

Yes, I understand the reference...

OK... You have a Best Buy in the area? Go in there, and purchase yourself a digital voice recorder. Costs about $40, and it's a little larger than a Bic lighter. Set the recording mode to 'stereo, HQ', hit 'record' and slip it into your shirt pocket the next time you go into that office. Don't bait the idiots, but don't back down easily, either.

Remember, you aren't trying to entrap anybody, or intentionally cause anyone to suffer a mischief. That would probably be illegal. What you are doing, is protecting yourself by documenting what you say, or any agreements, etc. that you might enter into. If they happpen to slip up and say something illegal on tape, that's too bad.
