original creditor and collection agency both claiming acct

can a creditor and the collection agency they sold it to BOTH claim the same account? I thought that the one owed the debt could only do that... i'm in VA if that makes a difference.

When you say "a creditor", do you mean the original creditor?

Yes, both the original creditor and the collection agency are both claiming the same account. I thought only the one to which the debt is owed may claim. Can someone please help??
