CRA company and 1099 forms?
Date: Fri, 02/13/2009 - 10:25
I keep getting calls come up on my caller id that show "private number" or "private caller". Today I ended up picking up the phone and it was some woman stating she was from CRA. I asked her what this was in reference to and she asked said it was in reference to a 1099 I had recently inquired about (?)
I asked her what that would have to do with anything and she hung up on me.
When I called them back (finding their number on google.com) they were rude, ridiculous and said they could "do what we want to do" and so I hung up and I told them to not call me again.
Does anyone know if this company is affiliated with CMG Recovery Services and/or what CRA is?
I am going to change my call acceptance settings on my phone so it does not allow my phone to accept calls from "private callers" but this seems quite the scam and why would they be asking if I get a 1099?

Consumer Recovery Associates - A.K.A "The Law Offices of Christpher Adams" ( which is total BS.) Was it Ms Wells calling from the offices of C R A? And she needs to hear back from you or someone who represents you in regards to an urgent matter that is on her desk. Call them back, record them if you can. If you are in a 2 party state, start off by telling them you are recording (if their phone systems has an robo "all calls are recorded for quality blah blah" then you don't have to say a word. You will likely be able to get several violations w/in just the first minute alone. No mini-miranda, mis-representing the legal status of the debt, over-shadowing with veiled threats of legal action. After that I couldn't keep from laughing so informed her that she wasn't dealing with the "least sophistacated consumer" and that I wasn't going to hestitate to go spend my $29 filing fee and sue them for the violations. Still haven't recieved their dunning letter yet but no calls in 3 weeks.
As for the 1099, they will try and use it as leverage to get you to pay. If the debt is significant, it could have a huge impact on your taxes. They can be challenged but it is very burdensome. They are only allowed to issue the 1099-C for the principle amount only. By the time it gets this far down to these complete and utter wastes of human skin, the lord only knows waht the principle amount really is.

It was a Ms. Wells but we didn't get far. And 1099's, I don't get those for income tax purposes for 2008. I am unemployed right now, which they must know, because they referenced the 1099 which I got from our state unemployment office.
Budd Hibbs has helped me out alot before, he is awesome.
I'll check out his site and in the meantime, I have changed my phone so it does not accept "unknown" or "private callers" so that will stop the daily calls from them. Unless they want to "unblock" their own number, which I doubt.
Thanks for the info and I would call them back and go thru all of that you suggested but I am not going to bother. If they have my phone number they have my address and they can mail me what it is they want (which these types of companies NEVER do, even when it is requested). For them to sue and get my unemployment benefits withheld would be hard for them to do, I would think, and they would have to file a request with unemployment commission for it to be done and I would have to be notified (in which case I would fight it). But I don't see them going that far either, especially when Ms. Wells was flustered when I asked her why whether or not I get a 1099 has anything to do with anything, lol.
Thanks again.
