So, back in 2002 I was involved in a car accident. I have insurance and thought all my bills were paid. Turns out the Trauma center at the hospital has a separate billing. I was not aware of this. So, between my 1 yr long health battle and problems with my other debts, this went unnoticed. So, it was sold to a collection agency 5 months later to Grant & Weber.

In 2004, I was served papers that went to my parent's address that no one can remember getting. They put a personal lien on me that has been gaining interest.

In 2009 I went to refinance my house and that's how I learned about the original debt of $4500 and the lien now at over $10,000 (interest and penalties).

Last month I contacted the company for the first time and asked for all records of the debt. I was told it would take a week and half. I called back 3 weeks later for a status update and I was told that they have lost the file and they told me to go ahead and pay for it because of the judgment.

The courts only have a one page sheet of the judgment on record and that's all.

They can no longer provide the paperwork necessary for me to study this and figure out my next course of action. What can I do to get rid of this?
