Well as far as I can see it is a debt that was charged off almost a year ago, and they seem to have somehow gotten their hands on it. I will get in touch with them regarding validation, what is the best way to do this? I've just read a lot of bad things about this company and so am a little wary of them.

Send the debt validation letter and know the account they are collecting for. Review it for any dispute before payment is done. You have to get the debt in accurate standing.

Ignoring a debt is definitely not the way to handle it - it will not go away, and could lead to damage to your credit. Obtaining the validation of the debt is a great first step - then, armed with that information, you can go forward with payment arrangments or whatever is necessary at that point.
