Yep....you better believe it. Although I doubt they would actually take you to court over $58 - not worth their time and money. Can you contact them and make an arrangement to pay it, since it's such a small amount?
I've had a collection agency contact me in the past over a $5.98 past due bill from AOL - which I didn't owe - but you know how AOL is. Even the agent on the phone from the collection agency thought it was ridiculous - said her hourly pay would cost the company more than she was collecting on this debt. I paid it, not because I owed it, but because I didn't have time to screw around fighting it, and I didn't want a mark on my credit report over a stupid $5.98.
More advice needed.
thanks. I would pay for it if it is mine.
it is originally from Cingular, the similar industry as your AOL.
but I do know if i owe $58. I did have Cingular until back in 2003. Closed the account and paid off.
I just found it because it was sent to a collection agency and listed on my credit report. Until this report indicates it, I was not contacted by either Cingular or the collection agency. According to the report, the statement says that dispute resolved - customer disgrees...weird since I had no communicaion with them since I closed the account.
I do know I have to obtain the validation of this account, but asking to cingular or collection agency? By phone or in mail?

If you are going to request validation of a debt, it is best to do it in writing, and send it via certified mail, return receipt requested (post office can help you with this). It costs a little more to mail it this way, but it's worth it.

I once had a collection letter for 1.98. No kidding. It was from MCI. I never had MCI in my life. I called them up and told them that they were nuts.
It's never shown up on my credit report and while I'm not a sue happy person if it ever had and it didn't get removed I would highly consider it.

Now if I got a letter like that, I think I would drive down to the local MCI office and pay it in pennies, just to prove how stupid the whole thing was, lol......

I didn't have a collection agency after me, but, they turned my water off years ago because I forgot to pay the .28 on my bill!! I just put an even dollar amount-they wanted $35. to turn it back on- after I threatened to call our local news station and newspaper, they did it for free  Karen

Geez, as if the water company's going to go down for the lack of 28 cents! Once again, I would make a point of paying this in pennies--or give 'em a dollar and tell them to keep the change, lol...
