For the past few weeks I've been getting phone calls from a collection agency called Diversified Consultants for a Verizon Wireless bill worth almost $900 in my husband's name. We both know for a fact that this is NOT our debt. My husband works for SPRINT PCS and has carried Sprint for the last 3 years. This guy that keeps calling is rude and very mean. We explained that we would never have carried Verizon since my husband works for Sprint and gets a better deal. We asked for validation and all we got is a reciept of the day it was activated and no signature to prove it was us. I asked for a list of the phone numbers that were called using that phone with Verizon. They sent me a list and sure enough we don't know any of the numbers. We flagged our credit for fraud alert and alerted Verizon of the fraudulent account. They told me they would take the account out of collections and they would stop calling. Yet for a whole four weeks now they still have been hounding me every day. We sent the company a copy of the police reports and yet it still continues. I'm at my wit end and don't know how to deal with this anymore. Advice please???

They sound relentless. How much more do you have to do to prove it isn't your debt. I haven't encountered this before but it might be a good idea to send a cease and desist letter and keep pulling your credit report to make sure there is nothing that is being reported incorrectly. That is scary to know that someone has possibly gotten your personal information. Good luck in getting this resolved and keep us posted. :-)

hi, jjones

I have been in this situation before with a CA. At this point, they have not provided proper validation to you. My best advice is to send them a letter, by certified mail return receipt requested. This will be a debt validation letter. While I know you asked them for this before, you will want to have this official record of doing so. A copy of such a letter can be found to the right ----------> in the DIY section, under "sample letters".

Once you send this letter, and get the green card back in the mail, they cannot continue trying to collect until they give you proper, legal validation. What they gave you is nowhere close to that.

At this point I would also consider getting firm with them. I would inform them that they have been notified that this account is fraudulent, and have done nothing about it. Tell them that you have provided police report and other relevant information. If this continues without proper validation, you will then sue them for fdcpa violations. That will put the ball in their court to either validate it the right way or expect nothing good. When they cannot validate it properly, they will be forced to drop it, or you sue them.

When you speak to Verizon, also, ask them for account statements. They should be able to provide them.
