Am I supposed to call back people like that or ignore that and wait for a real person to call? I hope they call again and maybe then I'll be able to catch the number.

No, I didn't ask my question quite right - sorry for the confusion. What I'm meaning is when they call and don't really say more than what I heard - should we call them back if we get the number or shouldn't when they call, say what they're calling about and give more information. I just hate calling a number, not knowing what I'm wading into!

It's important to know why they are calling. Here's what I would do:
1--call them back. Say, "Your company called me and I am calling to find out the reason for that call".
2--they should ask for you to verify who you are--go through that process. Many people complain about verifying the last four of your SSN, but if they already have the last four, there isnt any harm in saying "yes, thats correct".
3--they should then tell you why they called. They will tell you about some account or other. When they do, I would simply say this:
"Now that we have had this initial call, I will expect that my initial dunning letter shall arrive within five days. Thanks for calling, and have a nice day."
Then, END THE CALL. Dont stay on the phone with them. Your whole purpose is to find out why they called, and it is important to do so. Dont debate the account with them on this call, dont get into talking about how much or how little you can pay them for anything. Informing them of this shows them that you arent going to play their game and you also will force them to follow the law.
In your state, I think, it's an "all-party" state, which means you need to inform them if youre recording a phone call. I would seriously consider going to Radio Shack and picking up a microcassette recorder. Get one that phone wires will plug directly into, and then start recording these calls. You must--MUST--inform them at the start of the call that "this call may be recorded". The only time I would not inform them is if they say on their end at the start of the call that it may be recorded. If you have that disclaimer from them on tape, then they have given consent to be recorded. But I would definitely start recording the calls you get....
Thank you so much! I will indeed follow the instructions! :D
