All the above postings are at the end of 2006 and I am searching for answers in 2009! This company called me today and informed me that they needed to settle my (specific) credit card debt and implied "or else". I asked which debt (I'm am very deep in debt and have been trying to the extent possible to work with the companies directly and pay off the debt). They told me and I said I needed to verify through the original company before I spoke with them further. I first called the subsidiary of the company to whom I owed the money with whom I had been making payments on time on arrangement for 2 years. My representative there knew nothing other than the account had been pulled from her. I still had post dated checks with her which we immediately removed from the system. Then I called the company on whose credit card I owed the money. ( By the way everybody had a different amount that I owed with the company I was originally paying showing the lowest amount still to be paid.) They said they had decided to sell the account. Since I had been paying on it for 2 years I found that unexplainable and they could not give me a reason why. Then I called the company that they said bought the debt. Still no explaination as to why and the dollar amount owed was again different - $100 more than the company to whom I had been paying. But they said their collections were being done by Leading Edge Recovery Solutions. So I called the number I had originally received from the original phone call. They asked me rudely what settlement I was proposing. I said continuing to pay without interest month to month until the debt was paid off. They said they didn't deal with month to month. They told me I had 24 hours to accept one of 3 proposals they gave me "or else". Their 3 proposals (for someone who has been struggling to make the basic monthly expenses, keep the electricity on etc. and pay on at least a few of the credit cards were ridiculous, especially when just last month I lost 2 pieces of my rather unsteady income totalling 25 % of my monthly income and don't know where I will be able to make that up. One was 6 equal payments of over $700! One was a settlement of a lump sum payment of 80% of the debt. And finally a "mere $950 downpayment" to secure the $100 payments that I had been making for the future and interest was already being added to the account and would continue. All these numbers represent slightly more than what I have available for utilities, food, gasoline, insurance. And I have already promised to pay $400 a month to other creditors.
