I believe you are talking about collection agencies. Under FDCPA Act, the collection agencies can contact your employer only once if they are unable to locate you. However, the Act forbids them from revealing your debt information to him.

After a debt collector sends you the notice for debt collection,

After a debt collector sends you the notice for debt collection, you've 30 days time period to validate the debt. Your debt collector won't be able to file a lawsuit against you within this time period. Once the 30 days time period is over and you do not validate the debt, then the debt collector will think that you agree that you owe the debt. In that case, he can take legal actions against you.
