I need suggestions for how to handle this collection on this CC acct.

About six months ago I started receiving a letter from First USA saying I was behind on a CC. I never had a CC with First USA, and the last 4 digits of the number they were referring to I did not recognize, so I called but was never able to talk to anyone and did not have an acct # so I assumed the letter was incorrect. Long story, but I have a number of CC used for a business and was struggling to pay all those so I did not pursue this.

Fast forward and last month I get a letter from a collection agency (one of the worst) referring to a debt with the same last 4 numbers now with “Chase”, not First USA. I sent a VAL letter and just received a copy of CC statements, now from “Countrywide” (not the collection agency), that I now vaguely remember as a card I did a balance transfer on more than a year ago for $2500.

It appears I paid the acct. for 5 months last year and then stopped. I know for certain that I stopped paying only because I stopped receiving statements. I know this sounds bad but I have many CC and I pay what I receive a bill for. The CC Company even attached a copy of the bill for this month, Nov, which I know for a fact I have never been sent.

I find all of this strange (I keep meticulous records of things). Why three bank names? Why no statements sent but collection letters sent instead?

My thought is to (a) send a letter documenting the above to the CC Company – not deal with the collection agency (2) offer a very low settlement. But, have they violated anything with this behaviour? I

Has anyone ever had anything like this happen? Any suggestion on what I should do? Thanks much.
