Just before Xmas of 2010 a debt collector started calling me based in Florida ... After a few calls I decided to call them back and found out what account it might have been about. I havent had this account in years and it is not on my credit report. I do have old debt that i have taken care of in the past by settlements but I thought i was done.

I have some old credit card statements of the mentioned account so i called the original debtor and asked if I owed anything to them - or was it charged off. They said NO ACCOUNT in that name... then I pulled up my credit report and nothing about this account at all... Then I called county clerk to check on Judgements. I found no judgements, no credit card, nothing. They never stopped calling me until I wrote a letter to the FTC and Atty General of New York.

Now last week I started getting calls again from yet another collector ... I believe if I called them i will get the same info about the same acct. The first CA probably sold it off real quick to this new one.

I am scared and really want to make sure all my old debt has been taken care of BUT i cant seem to find out if I really do owe this. What should I do? I dont want to write to this company since I am scared they will then know my address. The first CA started looking at my credit report and this freeks me out. I have worked real hard to clear my debt over the years and dont want any problems.

HELP!!

Hi!
Welcome to the forums!
Next time you receive a call from the new debt collector, ask them the reason for calling you. If they are calling you regarding that debt or a new debt, ask them to validate it. If they are not able to validate it, send a cease and desist letter via certified mail to them. If they still call you, file a complaint with FTC and Attorney General. I know, it is very frustrating to go through this kind of a situation. But a lot of debt collectors do these things.

If the collectors are able to validate the debt (which I don't think they'll be able to do), then you can settle the debts with them.

The creditor said that they have no account in your name and your credit report does not mention anything about the same. In such a situation, you won't have to pay anything to the collection agency that's calling you. Inform them that you do not own the account and ask them to not call you any further by sending them a cease and desist letter.

I agree. If the OC can't find a record then obviously it is not your debt. You can be curious and ask the collector what they have because YOU called the OC and according to them, you owe nothing. See what they say..I would be really curious about that and they also couldn't give you the BS "We will order the documentation"..because clearly there isn't anything to order.

I will wait for them to call again. They seem to call with different numbers everytime. UGH!!! I tried really hard to pay off everything and really wanted to forget my stupid mistakes in the past but ugh they seem to get me every time!!

Thanks everyone for the help and I will let you know what happens.
