I just ran my credit report and see that their are two outstanding balances that have been put in for collection (a total of $500) for emergency room visits that my health insurer did not pay for. Gold Key Credit is handling the collection efforts. The debts are 4 years old.

I called Gold Key and spoke with a rep, he offered to settle the matter @ 50%. Great deal but he stated that this negative incident will remain on my credit report for 7 years (I am in NY).

I asked if he could remove it and he said he could not. I offered to pay the full amount of the debt if he would, in return, remove it from my credit history. He said he will speak to his supervisor but he HIGHLY doubted that she would allow him to do this because it was clear, in their records that I was aware of the debt and just ignored them. Admittedly, I was aware of the debt and I did ignore them.

I came across this site in a Google search and see that there are a lot of knowledgeable people here and thought before I make any payments I should ask for your opinion on what I should do next.

I should also add that the rep from Gold Key stated that the service provider is still the owner of the account and did not sell the account to gold Key. I was thinking maybe contacting the service provider directly could be a better option for me?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions!

In most cases, the original creditor hires collection agencies under contract. You cannot bypass the CA to get what you want, especially without cause.

Most companies do not do paid for deletes. The collection agency has nothing to goodwill...you are not a customer and they are not looking for you to voluntarily to return.
